Oppression of Women Around the World - Half the Sky; Part 2

  Which story or issue from the video resonated most deeply with you? Why?  The story from the midwife was really inspiring to me as a woman who works in healthcare. She was the first woman to establish so many things in her country, and I was really amazed by her accomplishments and abilities. The story of sewing the children’s legs together was horrifying; I had no idea the extent of how much they cut away and what agonizing pain that must have put the girls in prior to watching the film. Anything with children really hits me deeply, and this level of multinational on children was difficult to watch. Do you think most people in the United States are aware of the issues presented in the film? Why or why not?  I truly do not believe that people in the United States grasp the severity of these issues, nor did I prior to watching this film. Blog Post 2: Social Inequality, Poverty, and Health

     I found that this week’s materials covered the subject of social inequality, poverty and health from different outlooks. Personally, I really enjoyed the short story from The Wireless titled ‘The Pencilsword: On a Plate’ by Toby Morris. In this short illustration there were two panels that I really liked and thought summarized the subject well. The first stating “Richard goes to a great school. Well resourced, good kids. His teachers love their job.” And the panel beside it stating “At Paula’s school, the class sizes are large, the school is underfunded, and looks it. Her teachers are tired, stretched thin from the stress.” (Morris). These panels specifically emphasize how some people start with significant advantages while others struggle to overcome obstacles.
