Oppression of Women Around the World - Half the Sky; Part 2

  • Which story or issue from the video resonated most deeply with you? Why?
    • The story from the midwife was really inspiring to me as a woman who works in healthcare. She was the first woman to establish so many things in her country, and I was really amazed by her accomplishments and abilities. The story of sewing the children’s legs together was horrifying; I had no idea the extent of how much they cut away and what agonizing pain that must have put the girls in prior to watching the film. Anything with children really hits me deeply, and this level of multinational on children was difficult to watch.
  • Do you think most people in the United States are aware of the issues presented in the film? Why or why not?
    • I truly do not believe that people in the United States grasp the severity of these issues, nor did I prior to watching this film. Although it exists it is not nearly as prevalent and if so it is not talked about.
  • Briefly state your overall evaluation of the film (it's okay to be critical).
    • The use of celebrities to help bring attention to a difficult subject was really effective. I mentioned this film to a friend and she told me that she had already seen it. I asked her what made her decide to watch this film, and she responded that she started watching the film because of a celebrity she’s a fan of (George Clooney). I think that the film’s objective was to educate and spread awareness, and it was successful in doing so.
  • While individuals in the U.S. may not experience the same struggles or the extent of oppression seen in developing countries, gender inequality still exists. What do you think is one of the most serious issues of gender inequality in the U.S. today? Why? Cite evidence (statistics and/or facts) from the readings to support your answer. If you have knowledge of the issue from additional sources, feel free to share that information with your classmates as well.
    • Initially I wanted to say that the pay gap was such a measurable inequality but upon further reflection I would say abortion rights. In a vast sense women’s autonomy in their own healthcare decisions overall are a gender equality issue that is becoming very seriously controversial. In reading articles I found one that supports the readings in this module as well as the overall message Half the Sky is aiming to put out. The Tuffs Daily expresses that “Allowing the state to dictate a woman’s actions regarding an unwanted pregnancy not only restricts women’s reproductive freedom but also infringes women’s autonomy as a whole”. This was just in April of this year when the State of Arizona issued a near-total abortion ban. Although insurmountable issues are occurring worldwide around women’s rights, they are prevalent everywhere.
